Being Vegetarian in Colombia

I’ve been meaning to write this post for a while because (as my fellow vegetarians know), people LOVE to ask me what I eat. The reality is that being a vegetarian in Colombia really isn’t that hard. You do have to specify what vegetarian means (or what it means to you) because before I did, I was still given chicken, fish, salchichas (like hot dog/sausages). “Nada de carne” isn’t even sufficient because chicken, fish and the like aren’t always considered carne. But once you establish what it is that you eat, you can go to even the most Colombian restaurant, or home, and enjoy a lot of great Colombian food! (keep reading for pics!!!)

pan con queso (bread with cheese- the queso arrived just after), 2 huevos fritos blanditos (2 over easy eggs), frijoles (beans) and a tinto (coffee) plus jugo de maracuya juice (passionfruit juice) see next pic. This meal was $3 (9.000 pesos) at a super nice restaurant with a gorgeous view.  You could probably get the same breakfast for closer to 5 mil at a less fancy place.

Jugo de maracuya is the elixir of the gods…. I’ve never tasted something so delicious.

<—- Here we have a plate from Doña Rosa, the lady in Andes who cooks us meals. She is an amazing cook and the meals are only 5 mil!!! (and are usually way too much to eat) Here we have eggs, avocado, maduro (fried plantains), salad (usually made of cabbage, tomato and a vinaigrette) and rice underneath plus her ever famous beans and jugo de piña I believe.

Colombians also do sandwiches! This is a sandwich from Cafe de los Andes and a Frappe. I feel so bougie and American when I eat this. It’s really good! It’s just the Sandwich de Jamon but I ask for no jamon

Lastly, another Doña Rosa classic- beans, two forms of fried plantains, eggs, avocado, salad and rice hiding underneath.

I LOVE COLOMBIAN FOOD. I am not missing out whatsoever. If anything I eat more healthily here and eat more real food. It’s not easy to find soy, seitan or other “fake meats” (for sure can be found in cities like Medellin) but I feel like I get more nutrients from all the fruits and veggies I eat! Vegetarian friends, come here… you won’t be disappointed!
