Buñuelos are one of the most typical Christmas time foods in Colombia but I already included them in my post- 5 Typical Colombian Foods.
Natilla- Natilla is like a pudding cake that is super traditional around Christmas time. Of course there are a million varieties- some are more pudding-like and others firmer like in this picture. I chose this picture because it looks most like the natilla that I tried. It is super sweet, sometimes has raisins, and has this soft texture. It’s really good and you should definitely try it if you’re in Colombia around christmas time!Hojuelas- Hojuelas are flour based fried pastries. They kind of remind me of funnel cake or something. They are absolutely delicious, flaky, crunchy and sweet. They are not as popular (at least in my experience) as buñuelos or natilla but I get really happy when they are around! They are frequently found in “novenas” which are get-togethers before Christmas where people worship Jesus and eat treats like these.
Arroz con Leche- Arroz con leche is a super common dish year round here but around Christmas it’s almost a staple! There are maaaany variations from many countries but more or less it is white rice cooked with sugar and condensed milk. Some add cinnamon, lemon zest, raisins, or vanilla. It is some combination of rice, sugar, milk and other sweet things. It is soooo good!
Salpicon- Salpicon in Colombia is fruit (any combination of pineapple, papaya, mango, watermelon, banana, strawberries or grapes) sliced up and put in a cup with syrup or a little Colombiana which is a soda. I am not obsessed with this dessert because I don’t really like the uber sweetness. It is very popular though and it’s worth trying, I’d just personally rather have just the fruit 🙂
Mazapan- Mazapan is a super sweet treat made from egg, powdered sugar, milk, food coloring and vanilla. They decorate them to look like little fruits or figures. They are quite good but very sugary! The great part is they work very well for a themed party as (with skill) you can make them in the form of just about anything!
